Working Together Safely Through a Human-Centered HR Policy

WNL wanted to build a human-centered culture—one based on clear expectations, equal opportunities, and open dialogue as the foundation for development, collaboration, and social safety.
HR operations were well-organized, and recruitment was also a priority. WNL wanted to build on that foundation and create a culture where people can work together safely and comfortably.
Together with management, we formulated a clear ambition: to build the most progressive HR policy within the NPO—a policy that supports professional development, equal opportunity, collaboration, and workplace safety on a daily basis.
An ambition on paper doesn't change anything about day-to-day work. The question was how to make expectations, professional development, and safe collaboration regular topics of discussion between managers and employees.

We started by listening. We spoke with employees, managers, and senior leadership. We compiled their perspectives into an HR roadmap that we shared with the entire organization.
The common thread: clear expectations, equal opportunities, and more frequent open discussions about work and professional development. Managers became more aware of their role. We established the frameworks, processes, and skills needed to effectively fulfill that role.
We restructured the job classification system, developed a performance review cycle, and implemented Dialog. This established a regular rhythm for discussions about expectations, goals, performance, and development.
We also revamped the onboarding process. Sessions on safe collaboration and training for managers and employees helped put the change into practice.
Working together safely starts with clear expectations and open communication.
